Resistance Codes
- New agreement on Resistance Coding
For a better consistency in terminology and for a better communication between Seed Companies and their customers the International Seed Federation has recommended codes for pest organisms affecting vegetable crops. These codes are now the same as used by internationally recognized institutions. Use the link below for a full explanation. http://www.worldseed.org/pdf/Codes_Sept_2005.pdf
- Definition of terms describing the reaction of plants to pest or pathogens
This pdf-file explains the difference between immunity, resistance, susceptibility and tolerance.
2 different levels of resistance are defined: High Resistance (HR) and Intermediate Resistance (IR). http://www.worldseed.org/pdf/PosPaper_PlantReactionPathogens.pdf
- Order of Resistant Codes
In the Resistance Codes the order of the groups of pathogen/pests are as follows:
-Virus
-Bacteria
-Fungus
-Nematode
-Insect
Within the above groups of Pathogen/Pests, the order is alphabetical.
Tolerance to physiological disorders such as stip in Capsicum is no longer taken up as a Resistance Code. An exception is Silvering in tomatoes.
- Resistance Codes per species
Underneath are Resistance Codes (in pdf-file) for the species in which De Ruiter Seeds is breeding. In the table the scientific name, the English common name and the Code for the resistance is given, as well as the level of resistance which can be expected. For some pathogens/pests a resistance may be high in one variety, but only Intermediate in another (e.g. Powdery Mildew in cucumbers).
In the tables, the level of resistance which is claimed for a specific resistance is denoted by a dot.
- Resistance Codes in Brochures/Websites
Information about the resistance of De Ruiter Seeds varieties can be found in brochures and on our websites. To provide clarity we will show the difference between High Resistance and Intermediate Resistance on 2 different lines. For example:
PEPPER
TOMATO
| HR | ToMV/Ff:1-5/Fol:0-2/For/Va/Vd |
| IR | TYLCV |
- Resistance Codes on Seed Sachets
From 1st of May 2005, De Ruiter Seeds will no longer print Resistance Codes onto seed sachets.
- Extra information on Resistance
For more information about the way in which strains are defined see the following link: http://www.worldseed.org/differential_sets.htm
Strain denomination will be clarified on a case by case basis by the Pathology Working Group of the ISF who meet regularly to agree on new cases.
On the De Ruiter Seeds Website, wherever 'strain' is mentioned, this word covers 'races, strains, pathovars and biotypes'.
